How to Lace Tricker's Burton
Comparing Parallel, Overlap, and Underlap
We'll show you how each lacing method—Parallel, Overlap, and Underlap—looks and explain how to do each one.
Parallel
On both the official Japanese and UK Tricker's e-commerce sites, all Burton models were laced with the Parallel method.
As you can see in the image, Parallel lacing creates a series of neat horizontal bars. It's well-suited for formal looks, and most dress shoes are laced this way.
It also provides a strong hold while being easy to loosen, making it the most popular lacing method for dress shoes.
For details on how to do Parallel lacing, please see this article.

Overlap
Although the official sites exclusively used Parallel, Overlap lacing is also very commonly seen on the Burton.
It has a more casual appearance than Parallel, so it's often used on casual leather shoes and sneakers.
It also provides a very secure hold on the instep, which is why it's also used in sports.
For details on how to do Overlap lacing, please see this article.

Underlap
While I haven't seen many cases of Underlap lacing, its appearance is similar to Overlap.
It's the reverse of Overlap, where the lace passes through the eyelets from underneath instead of over the top.
Compared to Overlap, Underlap lacing has a weaker hold and is easier to loosen, making it a recommended method for shoes that feel too tight across the instep.

What's the Best Lacing Method for the Burton?
Here is a table summarizing the features of each method.
Method | Commonality on Burton |
Look | Hold | Ease of Tightening | Ease of Loosening |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Parallel | Common | Dressier | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ |
Overlap | Common | More Casual | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
Underlap | Less Common | More Casual | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★☆ |
So which method is recommended? Either Parallel or Overlap.
The choice depends on your preference, but why not choose based on your wardrobe? If you often wear dressier outfits, go with Parallel. If your style is more casual, try Overlap.
Personally, I mainly use Parallel, partly because it's easy to put on and take off.
How to Lace Tricker's Malton (Country Boot)
Comparing Parallel, Overlap, and Underlap
We'll show you how each lacing method—Parallel, Overlap, and Underlap—looks and explain how to do each one.
Parallel
On the official UK Tricker's e-commerce site, all Malton models were laced with the Parallel method.
It features a strong hold, is easy to tighten and loosen, and is suitable for formal looks.
Getting boots on and off can be a bit of a hassle, so the easy-to-tighten-and-loosen Parallel method is highly recommended.
For details on how to do Parallel lacing, please see this article.

Overlap
On the official Japanese Tricker's e-commerce site, they used Overlap lacing.
Overlap provides a strong hold and is a method often used for casual shoes.
Japan uses Overlap, while the UK uses Parallel. Why the clear difference?...

Underlap
Similar to the Burton, I haven't seen many cases of Underlap lacing, but its appearance is close to Overlap.
It's the reverse of Overlap, where the lace passes through the eyelets from underneath instead of over the top.
Compared to Overlap, Underlap lacing has a weaker hold and is easier to loosen, making it a recommended method for shoes that feel too tight across the instep.

What's the Best Lacing Method for the Malton?
Here is a table summarizing the features of each method.
Method | Commonality on Malton |
Look | Hold | Ease of Tightening | Ease of Loosening |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Parallel | Common | Dressier | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ |
Overlap | Common | More Casual | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
Underlap | Less Common | More Casual | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★☆ |
You can choose a lacing method based on "just because" or "preference," but why not consider the following criteria?
Since the Malton is a boot, the ease of loosening the laces is a major factor in choosing a method, in addition to appearance.
- If you wear dressier clothes, choose Parallel; for more casual outfits, Overlap.
- For a black Malton, use Parallel; for the more casual Marron or Acorn, use Overlap.
- If ease of loosening is your priority, choose Parallel or Underlap.
- If hold is your priority, choose Overlap.
3 Boot-Specific Lacing Variations
Variation ①: Lacing to the Top Eyelet
Simply lace all the way to the top. This provides firm ankle support, recommended for long walks.
Variation ②: Lacing to the Second-to-Last Eyelet (A)
[Wrapping the excess lace around the ankle]
Lacing to the top can sometimes cause the boot's collar to dig into your leg, and it makes them harder to take on and off. For these reasons, many people only lace up to the second-to-last eyelet.
If you tie a bow then, you'll have a lot of excess lace, so wrap the extra length around your ankle once.
- Lace with the Overlap method to the second-to-last eyelet.
- Wrap the long excess lace around once and tie a bow.
But here's a problem: isn't the bow too short?
The genuine Tricker's shoelace is 120cm, but for this style, 130cm is best.
If you need 130cm shoelaces, we recommend purchasing from MONDSHOELACE, where you can choose any length you like.
Here it is with a 130cm MONDSHOELACE "Thick Glossy Waxed Cotton Round Shoelaces 7/50""(3.5mm)" (in Brown). It's a perfect fit.

Variation ③: Lacing to the Second-to-Last Eyelet (B)
[Using shorter laces if wrapping is a hassle]
As mentioned above, if you only lace to the second-to-last eyelet, you can wrap the excess around your ankle, but frankly, that can be a pain.
However, if you just tie a regular bow, the laces will be far too long. The solution is to use a 110cm shoelace.
- Lace a 110cm shoelace with the Overlap method to the second-to-last eyelet.
- Tie a regular bow.

Here we used a 110cm MONDSHOELACE "Thick Glossy Waxed Cotton Round Shoelaces 7/50""(3.5mm)" (in Camel).
Since the genuine shoelaces are 120cm, it's a good idea to choose a custom length from MONDSHOELACE.

A Secure Knot for Tricker's: The "Berluti Knot"
If your standard bow knot keeps coming undone, try the Berluti Knot.
With just a small modification to the standard bow, this knot becomes much more secure. It's a highly recommended knot.
